FEBRUARY 2003 ARCHIVE

<- Back

• 2/26/03, 11:00 p.m.: Seriously, someone needs to cut me off...

I took some time this evening to update the U.P. sale page, including today's purchase of a Blue and White G3, which might be coolest thing I've ever bought there. Consequently, it was also the most expensive thing I've purchased at the UP (50 bucks), but I think it will be worth it in the end. Since it had no ram or drives of any kind, it became an instant "project," though I had enough stuff laying around (imagine that) to get it up and running, and it's currently chunking away at a 10.2.4 update. Now I think what I might do is buy a sawtooth mobo off ebay (I checked and it's compatible with the G3's PS, and should fit in the case) and then, if Sam is really nice, maybe he'd let me "borrow" his old g4 400 card. Then I could say I have AltiVec =)

• 2/25/03, 1:17 a.m.: Where was this in January?

It was damn cold outside yesterday morning.

• 2/25/03, 12:54 a.m.: This is getting ridiculous

So I sat down to actually take a good count of all the computers I have in my apartment right now, and found I have 13 of them, which is just plain ridiculous if you ask me. Most of them came from the U.P. for a marginal cost, a couple of them were free, and fewer still even work at all, but I am still pretty sure that a baker's dozen borders on excessive. In fact, I think I have more computers than clothes on the floor of my room right now, which is a significant accomplishment for me ;)

This is my room: it's got my iBook (on the bed--not pictured), the AMD box, two Indy's (one not pictured, the other just got a fresh install of Irix 6.2), a Quadra 840av, Sam's broken Beige G3, my "Frankenmac" 7600, the Gateway PII (under the 7600), and a Vectra (under the Beige).

This is the closet: that's my Pismo, Buddha (Andy's vectra), and the Color Classic I got from his sister. I also have a Powerbook 5300cs in a box somewhere, too...

...And for those of you who care, I think Xenosaga comes out today...

• 2/21/03, 12:20 a.m.: And exhale...

Man am I tired. I had two tests this week, one of which I didn't realize I had until I went to class on Tuesday and found out it was on Thursday, partially over a book I still had 300 pages to read in ;P So I spent a solid 10 hours yesterday reading and writing essays for my history test. Yuck. And I spent the better part of 3 hours on one damn assignment tonight...I am SO ready for a break right now. So enough whining. Did anyone see the front page of yesterday's daily? The G-Dub got some pub. You can check it out here. Maybe this means their food won't suck anymore =)

• 2/16/03, 7:20 p.m.: Absolut Krusty

I've been studying pretty much all afternoon, and I'm currently taking a break and watching the historic 300th episode of the Simpsons. Haven't watched it much lately, and I know I've said this before, but I'm thinking I may need to start making time during my Sunday evenings to take in what's can certainly at this point be considered classic. Gotta love the Simpsons ;)

After this weekend, I can now say I am no longer an LKS newbie. Nice work Sam, you guys rock. I'll definitely be going to see the hardcore dummer ninja + crew play again sometime.

• 2/15/03, 2:00 p.m.: Quickie

Gotta say that all that snow last night was really kickin' rad. Disappointed that it ended so soon, but it was fun while it lasted. I also found some time this afternoon to update the UP SALE page. Grand total stands at $99.50 for the semester. Next week I'm sure we'll hit the $100 milestone :)

• 2/13/03, 6:45 p.m.: This is what I don't miss about being in school...

Well, I apologize for the lack of a recent update, it's been one crazy-ass week. I feel 'bout ready to drop. I could bore you with all the details, but I'm sure y'all are familiar with how crap can just pile up. Here's just a couple highlights from this week:

-- For those of you who haven't heard, I acquired a couch over the weekend. It's the same super-comfy, worn out (and dirty) one that's spent the last 10 years in my parents' basement, only now it's been re-upholstered. My mom did most of the work, but I spent a majority of my free time the last two weekends helping take the thing apart and put it back together--a much harder task than I had imagined, and I don't think I want to see another staple for a very long time, either... I am, however, happy to have this addition to my apartment, and have already confirmed that it sleeps just as well now as it did before the overhaul ;)

-- I also attended the career "fair" this week, although "fair" is not even close to describing the experience. I think Sam's "meat market" desciption is much more appropriate. The whole deal is so fake and full of people trying to put on a good show--to such a degree that it just annoys the heck out of me, because I know the only reason people act this way is because they're expected to. I don't think I'm the only one who feels this way either. There's a chance I'm just jaded, though, because I didn't get any interviews :P

-- Last but not least, I hear there's some snow in the forecast for tomorrow. Yippee :)

• 2/08/03, 5:00 p.m.: "Oh no, we suck again!"

I guess that's not exactly a new revelation or anything, but this year's Cloneballers are capable of playing some of the most wretched basketball ever seen. Case in point: today's debacle against Colorado. Might be the worst game I've ever watched. I know I'm not the only one who's getting sick of these guys not being able to score AT ALL for the first 10 minutes of every big game; of brarely hitting 20 points by halftime; giving up cheap offensive boards, turnover after turnover, and in today's game, just getting flat-out abused inside and on the fast break. Even if I appear pessimistic at times, I'm a hardcore Cyclone fan at heart, and even for me it's getting to the point where I can't watch these guys play anymore. It almost hurts to watch. They aren't very talented, and hence, couldn't throw a rock in the ocean on offense, but that's not the problem. Just makes for a less exciting game. The problem is games like today when they just don't show up to play AT ALL, don't even look like they're trying, that it gets frustrating. (Got outrebounded by 10 today, and I believe that's a good indicator of overall effort.) Oh, well. They're young, they'll get better, but they really just need to get tougher. Better effort next game, I hope--I'll still be watching and cheering hard. Sorry for that rant, just something I needed to say. Go Cyclones...

• 2/06/03, 12:38 a.m.: I'm a blooming idiot...

I'm beginning to think that the UP is dangerous, at least to one's wallet. It just sorta sucks you in...until you get home with a trunk full of old computers and wonder "What the heck was I thinking?" I made the biggest haul yet earlier today, buying 3 copmuters for $25, none of which I really need, of course. The Indy's the nicest of the bunch--now if only I could find a good use for the best Indy ever made. Hmm...

the haul.

Also tonight, by popular demand (read: Lisa) I have included some larger versions of the snow pics in case any one wanted to use them for desktop pictures. They're available in standard 1280x1024 and 1024x768 resolutions; I'll put the originals on himac in case you want to make your own custom sizes or something. And I apologize for the quality of the pics--my camera is kinda for the birds.

• 2/03/03, 5:28 p.m.: Ain't it pretty?

Ah yes, it's about dang time. It finally snowed today, and although it's not a whole bunch, it made for an awesome walk this afternoon. Lucky for you guys I brought my digicam along and took a few shots while it was still snowing pretty good out at the quarry. Some of them turned out all right, I think...

This was taken from the south end again, this time looking west. Almost looks like the ocean or something...

The road out to the quarry. Looks like it's out in the boonies, but it's really just north of Cub Foods :)

snowy woods
A view into the woods from the side of the road. Not sure why I took it, but I was just surprised at how white everything was.

evergreens
I feel like this one would have been way more appropriate if taken about 40 days ago with some lights on it...
