| 7/31/03, 8:50 p.m.: "But why is the rum gone?" |
Last night, for the second time this week, I attempted to upload my 28mb worth of
Wisconsin pics. I let it run all night, and in 2 1/2 hours, it finally finished up-ing.
It will be nice to have a good internet connection in the new apartment... For now,
check out the latest addition to my gallery.

| 7/27/03, 5:20 p.m.: Got gallery? |
| I got back from the Wisconsin trip a couple days ago, and have been in that lazy vacation-mode ever since. However, I did finally get around to updating today in an attempt to get motivated again before the harsh awakening that awaits tomorrow when I go back to work. Vacation was pretty awesome; Door County is a really pretty place, although more touristy and less remote than I would have hoped. There's also not a whole lot to do there, but it was a very low-key and relaxing trip and I wish I was still there. At any rate, I have about 70 pictures to upload at some point, but I can't do it from here due to the lame internet connection I have. In the mean time, Andy helped me get a gallery set up for my other stuff, you can check it out here: diesel.student.iastate.edu/~benjanke/gallery/. It's a little rough at the moment, as I haven't had enough time to get it looking how I want it, but that will come later. I'll put a link to it under my "stuff" tab for now, I guess. I also took the time over vacation to update my archives so that they link properly. Yay =) |
| 7/19/03, 6:30 p.m.: Vacation Time |
| Tomorrow morning I leave for a vacation to Door County, Wisconsin. I'm not exactly sure what we're going to do up there, but I've heard it's really pretty country, and there's plenty of hiking trails, wineries, fishing, boat tours, and other fun stuff. If nothing else, it will be a nice break from work and a chance to get out of Ames, as well as take care of any sleep loss I've accumulated over the last month =) I hope it will be a good time, and I will take plenty of pictures for y'all to see when I get back. For now, though, click here for an expanded version of all the flying photos I took the other day. Due to a special request (Andy), I left them all in large format--enjoy! |
| 7/17/03, 5:35 p.m.: Into the sky |
Well, I went flying again today, this time for business purposes in Belmond, IA, which is just north and east of Webster City, I think.
More on that later, though. For now, here's a few of the better pictures--sorry for the lack of quality, it was a bit hazy and the windows were kinda dirty =(

| 7/13/03, 4:25 p.m.: It's always a good thing |
|
...to find out you're in better shape than you thought. Yesterday I ran the 5K in Ames's very own Midnight Madness.
I managed to run the race in 18:42 (after taking off the 10 seconds it took just to reach the starting line
at the beginning), which is about a 6:00/mile pace. Finished 56th out of 600+ runners, which isn't too
shabby. Much better than I thought I'd do, anyway. Also today (and I realize this is nothing new), while flipping through the best buy ad, I noticed that Sony has released a new desktop that looks VERY similar to the new G5's, at least in terms of case shape. The front still looks more like a quicksilver or MDD, but it's quite fishy, just the same. Check it out here. Oh well, I guess imitation is the highest form of flattery, or something like that... |

I found this gem at work today in the break room:
Life at work is like a tree full of monkeys, |
| 7/10/03, 12:05 a.m.: If man was supposed to fly, he'd have wings |
| Today I had a very unique and un-Janke-like opportunity: after work, I went with a co-worker to Ankeny to help him get his private plane from one airfield to another. This meant that I had a chance to fly in a cool little plane today, the first time I'd ever done something like that. I must admit I was pretty nervous; those little planes just don't seem safe to me, nor do they seem like they should even be able to leave the ground. This particular one was a single-engine four-seater Piper Comanche, manufactured way back in 1960. Evidently, it's a pretty nice plane, and after its annual tune-up, it actually flew really nice and smooth (much to my surprise.) My co-worker even let me fly it for a couple minutes, which was exciting. "You're a natural pilot" he said, "you look really comfortable up here." (Boy did I have him fooled, haha!) The most important thing is that we made it back in one piece. However, I feel like the biggest dumbass because I brought my digicam along so I could take some aerial photos, but forgot the dang thing in the car. So sorry, no photos--but at least y'all still have me around =P |
| 7/03/03, 5:10 p.m.: Cool beans |
I think it's been a good week and a half since I last updated--sorry to keep everyone waiting, but not a whole
lot of any interest is really going on. I've been working a lot, which is great for the money and all,
but it leaves me with little motivation for much of anything in the evenings since I'm so tired. Even after
nearly 3 weeks on the job, I still don't think I've completely adjusted to waking up at 6am. I just can't
do it. Oh, well. A few weeks ago, my parents got a new fishing boat (yeah, that's acutally it in the picture
there), and we took it out last weekend for its maiden voyage. It's a really nice used (3-year-old) Lund
with a 50-horse mercury, a remote-operated trolling motor, live-well, fish finder, and trailer. It's one
heck of a setup, and it works really nice as we found out on Saylorville and Big Creek last weekend. Now if
only I had any confidence in my ability to drive with the trailer, I might be able to take it somewhere cool sometime...
