3/27/03, 8:15 p.m.: Is it Thursday already?
I know this is old news, but I wish I was cool so I could work here.
*sniff* Alas, it is time to shed a tear for my poor Pismo, as I've finally decided to put it up for auction. It was a great computer, but I really can't justify having two (working) laptops. I hope it goes to a good home ;-)
3/23/03, 9:32 p.m.: Ho hum
Well I suppose all good things must come to an end, spring break included. I hope all y'all who actually traveled somewhere get/got back safely. As for me, I really didn't do a whole lot except waste time, and as a result, I feel like I didn't accomplish anything. But that's not entirely true, I guess: I went with Steve to see Sam play in DSM on Tuesday, went to a casino, took a short trip to Spirit Lake, fixed a couple computers, and watched a TON of basketball the last three days (the NCAA Tournament is the best sporting event EVER, with the exception of the World Cup, of course.) I even found some time for exercise in there a couple times (even finally breaking down and buying a new pair of running shoes for the first time in maybe 2 years), though, oddly enough, I found no time for school work...heh heh. I wonder what the Man thinks of that?
Speaking of computers, I have a small update. I replaced the PMU board in the Pismo with the one I bought on eBay (which naturally required disassembling the whole machine), and it magically works just fine now. So that really made my day, and I feel like the damn man now. Not only that, but I now know how to completely disassemble three types of Apple laptops, for all that's worth. Maybe I could get a job as an Apple tech =)
3/18/03, 11:50 p.m.: Hurray for spring break
Yes, it really HAS been a week since I last updated. Sorry about that. Since I last posted, a number of crazy things have happened:
--For those who haven't heard yet, I slept through my 421 midterm on Thursday. Not sure what happened, really. I had my alarm set for the am and not the pm, it was turned on when Schilling called me at 10am, the volume was cranked like usual...I just don't get it. Must have been so tired that I slept through the dang alarm. I've emailed the professor about it, but he said he'll get back to me sometime this week after he's graded all the exams. Great. I feel like a real idiot now...
--G4 update: I got a borked board. It will chime and power on, but won't load an OS. I did some research on eBay and found out that the guy who sold it to me "as is" (which I must have read right past...my first mistake) had originally bought the board from a guy who sold it as "damaged", meaning it will probably never work, regardless of what I do. However, I have devised a plan that invloves parting out the B&W (the mobo itself is worth ~$140 on eBay, which is just nuts) and getting me a G4 for about $125. Not bad.
--Last but not least, I had a phone interview with "Pure Fishing, Inc." of Spirit Lake, IA on Friday. They make a ton of fishing tackle/gear, which would be right up my alley, even for just a summer job. I guess I must have sounded competent enough, because they asked me to come back on Monday to take a tour of the plant--which I did yesterday, meaning I spent a good 6 1/2 hours in the car. Yuck. The "interview" went well, though, and I got a free lunch out of the deal, so it wasn't all bad. I'll hear back from them next week sometime, supposedly...
3/11/03, 9:32 p.m.: Spring Break cannot get here fast enough...
All right, I know this isn't much of an update, but I'm taking a break from studying for my heat transfer quiz tomorrow and thought I would appease the masses with an update. Then it's back to doing more heat transfer, and/or compressed air HW, and/or studying for my big 421 midterm on Thursday. Ack...this week is gonna destroy me =P
At any rate, inspired by our short conversation on IRC last night concerning automobiles, I tracked down the audio for the whole Canyonero commercial. It's 65 tons of American pride, and don't you forget it.
3/06/03, 9:45 p.m.: I've got what you want, baby.
Heehee, guess what I found today? That's right: cowbell =) And here's proof that JANKE'S GOT ALL THE COWBELL HE NEEDS:
3/04/03, 2:30 p.m.: Weeeee!
Haha, snow is awesome =)
In other news, I bought a sawtooth motherboard off eBay today. Can't wait to get it and start my next "project"...
In the spirit of posting odd music on your webpage, here's what you all missed on Saturday at my band concert: it's a really neat composition by Tchaikovsky called March Slav, which invorporates a bunch of Serbian folk songs with the Russian national anthem. It's really a great work of symphonic art, if you're into that stuff and have the 10 min required to listen to it. (Note: This is just a version I found; this isn't a recording from CY or anything.)
3/01/03, 1:45 p.m.: B&W Update
Well, here's the status on the B&W G3. It works, although it wouldn't boot when I first turned it on because for some reason it doesn't like having ram in the second slot. Strange. So once I got Jag installed, I decided to mess around with overclocking, which has proven to be a success so far. I ghetto-rigged a fan to the heat sink with some speaker wire, tracked down every spare jumper I could find, and got the thing OC'd to 450MHz, which is a pretty sweet boost of 50MHz. It wouldn't boot at 500, though, but that's no biggie. My next task is to run XBench in both normal and OC'd mode and see if I get any real performance increase from the overclock...
